Corbett House in Irthington

Corbett House was originally the village forge and is located in Irthington, a small, peaceful, friendly and pretty village with a shop, a school and a very popular pub.  We are just east of Carlisle near Brampton and half a mile from the Hadrian's Wall National Trail.  Our accommodation consists two en-suite guest rooms, a double room on the ground floor and a twin bedded room upstairs. We provide bed and breakfast and for your evening meal we would recommend our local in the village, the Salutation Inn - excellent food but booking at least a week ahead is strongly advised.  All this and only 10 minutes from Carlisle by car, the M6 or the A69. If you are a travelling tourist on holiday in the UK and are motoring north to Scotland or south to England on the M6, we are the ideal relaxing stopover.

Your hosts on a windy day on Hadrian's Wall.

Walking the Wall? Hadrian's Wall and the National Trail is less than half a mile away near Newtown making Irthington ideally placed for those walking Hadrian’s Wall. Walking E to W or W to E ? We are an easy  days walk from the Gilsland/Greenhead area to the east or Carlisle and the coast e.g. Port Carlisle or Burgh-by-Sands in the west. Bowness on Solway is possible in one day for experienced walkers only!  See our Useful Web Links page for sensible advice and maps of Hadrian's Wall including historical sites. (our O.S. Map Grid Reference is NY498617).

Walkers - Time to rest and recover?  You may wish to consider a two night stay with us - we'll pick you up when you finish your days walk from Irthington and then drop you off where you left off the next morning (within a 20 mile radius), all for a nominal charge - save on baggage transfers and the pressure of having to reach the next nights accommodation. We have drying facilities for those rare wet days! and our packed lunches are excellent value (please let us know about packed lunches the day before you require them). We can also arrange to transfer any luggage that you do not wish to carry to your next  stay - please ask when you book. If you wish to start or end your holiday at Carlisle Station or Newcastle Airport we can arrange transport at preferential rates.

We were awarded 4 Stars and a coveted Silver Award for Guest Accommodation under the new ratings from Quality in Tourism, the assessment service for VisitBritain (formerly the English Tourist Board).

Have a look at the new superb short video describing Hadrian's Wall - if it "stutters"  when you click the PLAY button, just click the PAUSE button and leave it for 20 - 30 seconds and then click PLAY again. See our Links page for more videos and information and the chance to order free brochures from the advertisers. NOTE If you cannot see the video frame in Internet Explorer, you need to Click on the yellow tool bar with the shield at the left hand end and click "Allow Blocked Content" . When the security warning frame opens just click "Yes"

The market town of Brampton, the nearest railway station, is 3 miles away and has a large antiques centre. Worth a browse and maybe a haggle if you see something you can’t resist. The Roman sites at Birdoswald and Gilsland or the Scottish Borders are easily accessible. Carlisle is well worth a visit and the award winning Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery will provide you with a lively introduction to the city, the Border country and the Roman occupation.
